The SM2 Platform

The SM2 Platform
The Song Meter SM2 Platform is a powerful and expandable foundation supporting a wide range of current and future long-term acoustic monitoring applications in harsh environments.

The SM2 platform is expandable to meet a wide range of current and future needs. For example, the external sensor port can be used to measure and record soil or water temperature to correlate with the calling activity of amphibians. The digital expansion connectors on the back of the SM2 motherboard can host our SM2BAT stereo 192kHz or mono 384kHz ultrasonic interface to record the echolocation calls of bats. The configurable amplifier can support a wide range of audio input sources such as hydrophones for recording underwater acoustic signals from fish or cetaceans. And the SDIO-capable card slots can support future capabilities like GPS time synchronization and wireless connectivity.
Terrestrial Acoustic Package
For birds, frogs, and other terrestrial wildlife vocalizing in the audio (20-20,000Hz) frequency range, the Terrestrial Acoustic Monitoring Package bundles the SM2 platform with two removable, weatherproof, and highly sensitive omni-directional SMX-II microphones.
Terrestrial Ultrasonic Package North America
For bats with echo-location calls in the ultrasonic frequency range up to 96kHz - most North American bats - the Terrestrial Ultrasonic Monitoring Package (North America) bundles the SM2 platform with a two-channel 192kHz 16-bit sample rate card and a weatherproof ultrasonic transducer.
Terrestrial Ultrasonic Package European
For bats with echolocation calls in the ultrasonic frequency range up to 192Hz - most European bats - the Terrestrial Ultrasonic Monitoring Package (Europe) bundles the SM2 platform with one-channel 384kHz 16-bit sample rate card and one SMX-US weather resistant ultrasonic microphone for recording bats at higher frequencies.
For fish, cetaceans, and other underwater wildlife, the Underwater Acoustic Monitoring Package bundles the SM2 platform with a hydrophone. Many other permutations are possible, for example combining the SM2BAT ultrasonic recorder with hydrophones to record echo-location calls of dolphins.
The powerful Song Meter scheduler can be easily configured to implement even the most advanced and complex schedules, even relative to changing sunrise and sunset times. Song Meter uses almost no power when idle between recordings, and has extremely low power consumption while recording. With only 4 D-size alkaline batteries, Song Meter can record audio for almost 250 hours on a schedule spread out through a long deployment of months at a time.
