Introduction to Trail Monitors

Infrared trail monitors allow you to record the movement of animals through a particular point on a track or within an area such as a small clearing. They can also be set to trigger a range of equipment including a camera or camcorder to get photographs of the animals as they go about their business undisturbed.

When an animal breaks the infrared beam, this is recorded by the monitor as an event. All monitors record the date of the event and the time to the minute. Up to 1000 events can be recorded on standard models and up to 16000 on some models, providing comprehensive information on animal movement patterns.

These units from TrailMaster make no noise and have no lights to draw attention to them or to disturb wildlife. The monitors are made from Norel plastic which will not absorb odours which could disturb animal behaviour. All units are weatherproof and will operate under extreme weather conditions including rain, snow and extremes of temperature (-40°C to 55°C).

TrailMaster equipment is widely used by biologists and wildlife researchers around the world. Mammals, birds, reptiles and sometimes even insects can be monitored and photographed with the system.

Trail monitors have also been used in many other outdoor applications including counting visitors or cars in national parks, horses on bridleways, and boat movements on canals and rivers.
